DAY 27
25th August
Karijini National Park
Going to check the west end the of park today.3 couples are
doing a short easy loop today they had enough climbing yesterday. Harder walks
graded 5 with 6 being the hardest. Headed off to Weano Gorge after stopping at
a couple of lookout where 4 gorges meet, unreal scenery. Started our walk down
Weano had to wade through water, make a chain to pass backpack through so they
didn’t get wet and climb up and down rocks and use a single bar handrail to
climb down a waterfall to get to the end. Weano Gorge is 100m high and narrows
to 1m width at the bottom in parts. Spectacular scenery and some ladies
were a bit nervous about some of the
descents but a lot of fun.

Rock climbing |
|
We had to wade through freezing water but worth it! |
After that we headed
to Hancock Gorge which is also difficult. We climbed down steep stairs and
ladders to get to the base of the gorge. After clambouring along rock ledges
for a while some ladies had had enough and waited. We left our back packs with
them as the water was quite deep. VERY ICY WATER!!! We next had to climb some
more rocks and came to the Amphitheatre. A beautiful stepped rock ledge with
100m high red rock walls behind it – Magnificent. The next part was very tricky
some more ladies stayed here. Pam and I and 6 of the guys went on. We had to
spider climb through the next section which means using your arms and legs on
each side of the gorge walls. Nev and Ian swam through the deep part while we
edged our way gingerly along the gorge walls. Unreal achievement!!!! A bit more difficult coming back and a young
agile backpacker couple helped us oldies find a way out along the wall to the
spider walk section. They were very nice. Met up with everyone else and came
back to camp about 1.30pm for lunch and a quiet afternoon.
Photos don't do the scenery justice the colours in the rocks were vibrant with the sun on them!
