Day 9 7th August Arthur River to Trephina Gorge

DAY 8
7th August

Arthur River to Trephina Gorge

Another great sunrise getting spoilt with these.
Headed off very early as not sure what the 4x4 track will be like today.
Passed a huge termite mound the biggest by a long way that we have seen so far the rest have been less than a metre high.

Huge termite mound

Road very dusty not a lot of traffic here! Really red soil and some bull dust.
Country side is changing we are passing the magnificent Harts Range beautiful red coured mountains when the sun shines on them.
Turned off main road at a 4x4Track sign which was the start of Cattlewater Pass a back road into Alice Springs through some stations and Trephina Gorge. Had morning tea at turn off and set off. Boys aired down ready for the rough track.

                    Airing down for 4x4 track

Track was pretty good and the wildflowers were beautiful.
A couple of patches of bull dust and some beautiful dry river bed crossings but nothing to worry about. The ghost gums against the red soil look fantastic. Stopped on trackk for lunch and then had a steep descent into a river bed and passed Old Ambalindum Station and headed for historic Altunga Area. This was an early gold mining area which is now National Park. Stopped and went down a couple of mines.

Paul and me at the bottom of one of the old gold mines had to climb down the ladder duck through the mine and come up another ladder at next mine. NO GOLD!

Kept going to Trephina Gorge National Park for the night camp. Arrived fairly late so had dinner and an early night no firewood here and a bit cool. Magnificent scenery.
