Tanami Downs to Ord River
Sunday 12th August Tanami Downs to Ord River
Beautiful sunrise! Even the letterbox has a heat shield! |
Up very early pretty cold and windy this morning. Magnificent sunrise! Headed back on the Tanami towards Wolf Creek
Crater. Lots of corrugations and bulldust spots. Crossed the Western Australian
Border and wound our clocks back 1 and a half hours . Quite a few road trains
along the Tanami Rd going to the mines. Country
side varied from no trees just ant hills to scrubby bushes and then taller
trees near rivers beds. Most of the land is flat until we came to the Balgo
Hills. This is where Tracey was the community nurse for a while. You need a
permit to go into the community. We passed the top end of the Canning Stock
Route turn off. (next year!) Turned down pretty rough road to Wolf Creek
Crater. Amazing place- perfect round crater, a couple of kms around the top
edge and steep sides. Really windy up
the top. Nev and I climbed down into the
crater floor and went for a walk. Lovely
wildflowers down there. Had lunch and it was too early to stop for the night as
nothing else is there.
Me on top of the rim of crater amazing perfectly round .
Saw a lot of wild horses on this part of road. We
decided to keep going to Halls Creek, got fuel and said goodbye to Wendy and
Paul (will meet up in Broome again). 3 vehicles headed towards the Bungles. We
camped by the Ord River in a free camping area. Beautiful spot next to river,
it has a bit of water in it and it was very pretty. Brahman cattle wandering around the
river bed. The others wanted a shower so
headed to Caravan Park at Bungles turn off. We will meet them in the morning.
Our camping spot beside the river!
Lots of healthy looking Brahman around
